One sketch that made a difference

This is probably the most important sketch I did in those nine years of development. This one sketch was actually enough to convince LEGO that the secret was a good idea. It is a very quick side view sketch of a giant robot (at that point called “Core 2”) lying underneath an island with the mouth under a volcano and a canyon called “Brain Canyon” above its forehead. For many years this was the only visual showing the secret and it was kept in a deep drawer at my desk. We in the team figured that if we were to keep the secret it was a good idea not to make to many pictures of this. We knew that just one “leakage” would ruin many years of good story. We used the phrase “The big story engine” as a code when mentioning the dormant robot.

  1. This blog is really fascinating and inspiring to read, thanks for posting! :)

Can I ask how you got into the creative industry? I'm currently looking for graphic design work , but I'm not having a lot of luck. I'd really appreciate any advice you have.

  3. I recall an event in the MNOLG about the Onu-Matoran no longer being able to dig through a layer under Mata Nui. I think they said it was hard, like metal. I've been wondering if they hit the Mata Nui robot or a Bohrok nest like thing.

  4. I remember that event being their first encounter with Protodermis, and it was the outer face of the MU.

  5. This series is honestly my greatest part of my childhood. Here's hoping it returns so more generations can see this greatest of all stories.

  6. When was revealed that Mata Nui was a giant robot who had almost a universe inside him I highly doubted it was decided since the beginning. But you and LEGO team made a wonderful job hidding it so well! Amazing!

  7. Can I just say how much I appreciate the work put into this theme by you and the team. I'm amazed that through the many revisions and changes in direction over the years, the Mata Nui robot was planned from near the beggining! It ties the whole 'chronicle' together perfectly and was well worth the wait.
