Mask Of Life Concept

Designing the mask of life was one of the coolest assignments in the many years of working with Bionicle. It is fantastic to work directly with the LEGO designers to bring real plastic elements to life. Especially when it is an element with that epic importance to the whole legend. It was great to be able to take the early Vitruvian robot logo and incorporate the idea into this mask. So the secret idea of resurrecting the giant robot Mata Nui was moulded straight into the plastic.

  1. Wow this is amazing i never knew so much work went into designing the basic form of the mask. i'm curious as to how long it took you to draw all of these designs. i know i could never had done that.

  2. This is only the tip of the iceberg. My sketches are done pretty fast (maybe one or two days) and they are only done to show the LEGO designers the basic idea. After that the real work begins and the LEGO designers have to turn the sketch into 3D model, 3D print and prototype. Then it has to go through all the technical tweaking before the real plastic mould is created in steel for production.

  3. I notice that in the middle picture of all of the Mask of Life concepts...one of them (the one on the bottom left) looks alot like Tahu Mistika's mask. Was there any connection? Did you discard that concept for the Mask of Life and decide it looked better on Tahu?

  6. HI. I have one question. I never understood why the lower/leg part of mask (picture one, up right; golden mask) was so far out. Why? What was the purpose? Wouldn't be better to keep it with shape of everything else?
